The works

A reading guide to the novels, themes and approaches that reveal the strength and variety of Grazia Deledda's fiction.

Deledda's writing

Which novel should you read first?

You do not need to know all of Deledda's books to begin reading her work. Canne al vento is often a good starting point, Cenere explores the relationship between mother and son, and Cosima opens a window onto the writer's youth and development.

This selection is not intended as a complete catalogue: it helps readers choose a book based on their interests.

Eight works to discover

Eight works that open the door to plots, characters and themes. Where needed, we distinguish serial publication from the first book edition.

Early writing

Anime oneste

One of her earliest books, exploring family relationships, social life and a Sardinian world observed at close quarters.

To discover the writer's beginnings.

Her early fiction observes the family as a place of affection, expectations and shared rules. Reading it alongside her mature novels reveals the development of her language: everyday events gradually give way to inner conflicts and moral ambiguity.

Choices and conflicts

Elias Portolu

A novel in which feeling, guilt and responsibility become intertwined in the story of a man torn between desire and conscience.

For readers who enjoy complex moral dilemmas.

Elias returns from prison and falls in love with Maddalena, who is engaged to his brother Pietro. His conscience cannot silence his desire. A religious calling becomes an attempt to resolve his inner struggle, but no easy answer.

Mothers and sons

Cenere

The story of a family separation and the search for one's roots, made unforgettable by the conflict between sacrifice and the need for love.

For a moving and painful story.

Young Anania's search and his mother Olì's fate reveal the weight of social judgement on private life. The novel was serialised in 1903 and published in book form in 1904: the date shown here refers to the book edition. The story also inspired the 1916 silent film starring Eleonora Duse.

Family and fate

L’edera

A novel about the weight of family bonds and choices dictated by necessity.

For the tensions of domestic life.

The title evokes a bond that both supports and constrains. Loyalty to the family can become self-sacrifice, testing the line between what seems right and what one eventually does. The novel raises these questions without easy answers.

Fragility and fate

Canne al vento

Set in the fictional Galte, this novel weaves landscape, desires and human fragility into one of Deledda's most widely read works.

For a symbolic classic.

The servant Efix lives alongside the Pintor sisters, guarding a secret guilt from the past. Giacinto's arrival upsets an already fragile balance. In Galte, inspired by Galtellì, wind, light and open spaces are more than atmosphere: they help shape the story's meaning.

Freedom and conventions

Marianna Sirca

A woman confronting love and social judgement in search of her own path.

For reflection on freedom and belonging.

Marianna is one of Deledda's most powerful female characters. Her wish to decide for herself meets the force of social habits and power relationships. The novel invites us to consider personal freedom and belonging.

Faith and responsibility

La madre

A taut story centred on the tension between maternal love, conscience and religious vocation.

For a short but intense read.

Paulo, a young priest, and his mother struggle with the demands of faith, love and fear of scandal. The novel focuses on emotions rather than spectacle, making the characters' inner conflict central to the story.

Memory and growing up

Cosima

Through fiction, Deledda revisits her youth, her family home, her early reading and the emergence of her vocation.

To discover the writer through memory.

The author's fictional alter ego introduces reading, first attempts at writing and the clash with social expectations. Serialised after her death in 1936 and published as a book in 1937, the text should be read as an autobiographical novel, not a literal account of events.

Beyond the eight titles

A much larger body of work

Restricting Deledda to her best-known novels means overlooking part of her artistic development. Her early works include Fior di Sardegna (1892) and Racconti sardi (1894); mature works include Colombi e sparvieri (1912), L’incendio nell’oliveto (1918) e Il paese del vento (1931).

Deledda wrote stories, novels and works drawing on popular traditions. These texts reveal changing interests, from her early portrayals of Sardinian life to fiction increasingly focused on psychology and the symbolic meaning of landscapes.

For a comparative reading path, choose an early work, a middle-period novel and a late book: forms and settings change, but questions about the individual, conscience and community return.
